As you may be aware, the dates for the Daylight Savings Time
have been changed since 2007. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 enacted by the U.S.
Congress extended Daylight Savings Time (DST) by four weeks beginning in
2007. In the United States, DST will start at 2:00 am on the second
Sunday of March and end at 2:00 am on the first Sunday of November.
Electronic clocks that had pre-programmed dates for adjusting to DST
will be incorrect, and will require updates to computer operating
systems to realign and correct the dates that the time changes or have
the dates manually adjusted 4 times a year.
What this means is
that access control systems, digital video recorders, alarm systems, or
any other device that record events based on time or execute activities
based on schedules that have automatic DST time correction will
need to be updated for the new start and end of Daylight Savings Time.
Systems not updated will not be operating with the correct time settings. This could cause many associated events,
such as door locking and unlocking or alarm system auto-arming, to be
off by 1 hour.
The majority of the
systems pulls the time and date from either a computer work station,
server or its own associated operating system. For many of these
systems the fix is either a simple patch (such as for Windows XP) or an
application that needs to be run as in the older unsupported Windows
2000 operating system. We have been in contact with the associated
manufacturers to obtain their approved methods of fixing this issue
specific to their products. Certain manufacturers have requested that
we use a modified application that they created when we update.
